today. >>> a group of newtown residents has formed themselves into a group called newtown united. there is not necessarily people who have been politically active in the past or who have had any experience trying to change policies or get certain law enacted. but some members of newtown united headed to washington today. they took the day off from their jobs. they woke up at dawn. they drove to washington to go meet with members of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. newtown united, a group of people at the epicenter of national tragedy. one of the parents who traveled to washington today was lucky enough to have his child, who attends sandy hook elementary come home from that school on friday. but he said today that he is taking action now in the wake of the shootings because he does not think the next time it should just depend on luck. >> every time something like columbine, virginia tech were happening, i would avert my eyes, and i will still think that something will be done. but all those believes were shattered on friday. and now i think we all need to speak up. >>
school shooting in newtown, connecticut, so many people across the country, around the world really, have been asking how can i help? the united way of western connecticut has set up a fund to provide support services for those affected by the tragedy. they have now raised $3 million. that is incredible. joining me now are two leaders of this fund-raising effort. will rogers, a selectman of newtown and kim morgan, ceo of united way of western connecticut. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> $3 million, an incredible milestone. and you will raise so much more in the coming weeks and months. i know there has been a debate about how to distribute these funds. kim what is the latest thinking on that? >> when we started the fund, it was a way to be a guardian. our intent is to turn the funds over to the community and let them decide. >> the families as well, right? >> they are a cross section of the community input, yes. but the fund was soliset solici as an undes ignated fund. we are trying to be as broad as possible. >> what are some of the suggestions floating
before but it's newtown. we don't know if there's any injuries but they are deploying units and cnn is sending crews and our affiliates are sending crews as well. they are en route to an elementary school in newtown. we are working our sources and our affiliates there in the area to try to figure out what is going on. as you know, law enforcement -- and we do here at cnn and all news organizations take it very seriously any time there are reports of a gun or shots fired at a school, elementary, junior high school, college, what have you. and that's what we are doing right now, checking on that for you. we're getting some information in. our producers are gathering it for us. we'll be back with the very latest on the other side of this break. don't go anywhere. elementary. the school now cleared of shooters. newtown police say there's at least one other person shot. police telling abc news that they're still treating this as an active shooter situation. state emergency management officials confirming that ambulances and other units are en route and staging near the school. again, these are pictures from the park ing lot of the school. police also believe they may have located the suspect's car, again, as we just are getting information here, and again, it's sandy hook elementary school, about 15 miles from danbury, another major city in connecticut. two hours north and east offing new york city. >> obviously, of incredible concern is the extent of the injuries that may have occurred there at sandy hook elementary school. we do know according to the newtown bee on the scene that there was one child carried from the school by police, seriously wounded. another injuries have been reported we know that these emergency personnel gathered their enmass, the extents of the injuries unclear. according to the website of newtown school, afternoon buses and
